Resume: Resume is a French word meaning "summary". A resume is ideally a summary of one's education, skills and employment when applying for a new job. A good resume would start with a
Brief Profile of the candidate, Summary of Qualifications, followed by Industry Expertise and then Professional Experience in reverse chronological order.

Curriculum Vitae: Curriculum Vitae is a Latin word meaning "course of life". It is more detailed than a resume, generally 2 to 3 pages, or even longer as per the requirement. A C.V. is used to highlight the general talent of the candidate rather than specific skills for a specific position.

Bio Data: Bio Data is the short form for Biographical Data and is an archaic terminology for Resume or C.V. In a bio data, the focus is on personal particulars like date of birth, gender, religion, race, nationality, residence, marital status, and the like. A chronological listing of education and experience comes after that

A resume is preferred in Canada and US. They prefer the curriculum vitae only if they are applying for a job in abroad or if searching for an academic or research oriented position.

In the Ireland, New Zealand and UK the curriculum vitae is used in all contexts and resumes are not used at all. In Germany, the curriculum vitae is more commonly known as Lebenslauf (latin origin) and is only one of many application document the German job aspirants must produce to get an interview.

In India, Australia and South Africa, these two terms are used interchangeably. The term resume is used more for jobs in the private sector. The Curriculum Vitae is used for public service positions.

In the continents of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East countries, the employers are expect to receive the curriculum vitae from the job seekers.
